SKID ROW, LOS ANGELES
SKID ROW ABOUT The heart of Los Angeles’ Skid Row is comprised of roughly 50 city blocks (0.4 square miles) of the greater downtown area. An estimated of 91,000 homeless people living in Los Angeles County, it is estimated that 2,521 homeless persons can be found within the 0.4 square miles of the Skid Row area. Skid Row contains one of the largest stable populations of homeless people in the United States. HOMELESSNESS THE PROBLEM The spread of long-term homelessness in L.A. County has alarmed communities from Sylmar to San Pedro, where residents complain that their quality of life is threatened by crime and trash from unsightly encampments. Homeless are seemingly everywhere and yet they are the invisible people. They have become so common as to become a part of the landscape, of no more importance than the wall of a building they lean against, or the freeway overpass that serves as their bedroom ceiling.
